THE Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra performs a beautiful programme of music from the early 20th century at The Anvil this Saturday.

Kirill Karabits conducts and virtuoso cellist Johannes Moser joins the orchestra.

The evening begins with Stravinsky’s ballet Pulcinella which was written for the Ballets Russe.

This is followed by Walton’s late Cello Concerto, full of bewitching music, which the composer regarded as the best of his concertos.

The evening ends with Shostakovich’s dazzling First Symphony which reflects the optimism and experimentation of the early 1920s.

One of the world’s great choral ensembles, The Sixteen, comes to The Anvil on Wednesday, 5 December with a special Christmas programme that includes a feast of carols and seasonal choral music.

From Byrd to Bennett, this special Christmas programme will feature traditional versions of stunningly beautiful Tudor and Renaissance works combined with modern settings to create a ravishing and satisfying evening.

Heard at their best in the fantastic crystal-clear acoustics of The Anvil, this is the perfect way to start your Christmas celebrations.

Bringing seasonal cheer to The Haymarket on Tuesday, 11 December are Joglaresa.

Their Christmas concert Heigh Ho the Holly! is a romp through the carols of Christmas Past, when Yuletide was the time that the Holly King triumphed over the Oak King in their yearly battle. With fidel, harp, bells, pipes and voices sounding together, Joglaresa ring in Christmas and New Year.

Singer and songwriter Thea Gilmore performs on Saturday, 15 December.

Her spine-tingling, pure-toned voice will leave you moved, exhilarated and spellbound.

Her acoustic Christmas tour features material from her album Strange Communion, a collection of seasonal songs ranging from joyful to meditative, from introspective to darkly humorous, laced liberally with the occasional highly individual versions of Christmas hits.

Having released her highly acclaimed Christmas album Upon a Winter’s Night in 2016, Cara Dillon and her band will be capturing the mystery of the season on Thursday, 20 December, with a collection of songs ancient and modern providing a welcome antidote to 21st century Yuletide excess.
