SING some Beethoven at a special one-day workshop at the United Reformed Church, in London Street, Basingstoke.

The session will be led by David Gibson, whose broad experience includes conducting, among others, the Philharmonia and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

He is musical director of the Southampton Philharmonic Choir, the Guildford Choral Society, the Croydon Philharmonic Choir and Basingstoke Choral Society (BCS).

Gibson said: "We want people with enthusiasm and a desire to sing. Previous experience isn't necessary and, provided that you can sing in tune, why not come and try it?

"If you like it, you may go on to broaden your understanding and knowledge of choral music, and at the same time open up a whole new circle of friends."

The workshop - on Saturday, September 30, from 9.45am to 1.30pm - will feature the Missa Solemnis as the main work, which Beethoven himself considered to be his greatest masterpiece. This truly wonderful piece of choral music will literally have you singing from the rooftops.

It is a chance to sing a little and learn a lot from the great master.

BCS' forthcoming concert includes this fantastic work and it will be performed, with full orchestral backing from the New London Sinfonia, on Saturday, November 25, at The Anvil.

The programme will begin with vocal exercises and techniques required for agility, accuracy and dynamic range. There will be a coffee/tea break, followed by sectional work on specific passages, slow repetition, concentration on text, articulation and musical details.

The third session will comprise a sing-through of passages worked on in session two, group assessment of goals achieved, and warm down.

Participation in this workshop costs £6.
