DESPITE the fact that a number of factors have caused the closure of Fairfields Arts Centre Trust (FACT), the building will remain open for a new chapter in its history.

A plan has recently been initiated whereby local theatre company Proteus, whose current prefabricated hut on the QMC campus is unsuitable for their future plans, to move into Fairfields’ premises.

Fairfields Arts Centre was established in the old Fairfields Infants School, a Grade II listed building, 28 years ago and during that time there have been four centre directors.

Andy Buchanan, who has been in the position since 2001, has curated over 100 exhibitions, bringing work by many national and international artists, including Matisse, David Hockney and Tracey Emin to Basingstoke.

The centre’s two galleries have also shown the photographic work of Walker Evans, Julia Margaret Cameron and Snowdon.

In addition, local artists were given solo exhibitions and emerging talent was supported, people who would go on to achieve great success nationally. Recently, a group of young Basingstoke artists were given studio space in the old caretaker’s flat and have already capitalised on this opportunity.

Chair of the Fairfields board, Hannah Williams, said: “We are saddened by the closure of FACT as Fairfields Arts Centre has been, since Andy became artistic director, the key provider of visual arts in town. We have offered a wide range of classes and workshops as well as a curated gallery showing work from local and national artists.

“This legacy must be cherished, as the visual arts are the Cinderella of the cultural scene in Basingstoke.

"We welcome Proteus to Fairfields as this has ensured that the building will remain open and available to the public.”

To aid with future programming, Proteus would like to hear from anyone who currently runs or attends a class at Fairfields Arts Centre.

Mary Swan, Proteus’ artistic director and chief executive, said: “We encourage people to get in touch with us as we want to continue as much of the good work going on at the centre as possible."
