YOU are only as good as your last job.

That is according to Steve Vanhinsbergh, whose family-run business stoneCIRCLE carved out a deal worth more than £100,000 after installing a client's bathroom.

The bathroom belonged to Toby Hunter, who happens to be chairman of The Waterbridge Group, which owns Reading's latest and grandest hotel - The Forbury. And he was looking for a company to produce the stonework for the new venue's bathrooms.

Mr Vanhinsbergh, whose company's workshops and showroom are in Kingsclere Road, Wootton St Lawrence, just outside Basingstoke, said: "If you do good quality work on time and at a reasonable price, you never know what will come from it.

"It seems Mr Hunter was impressed with the quality and speed of our work at his home, which led to us winning the bid to install solid shower trays, baths and vanity tops at the hotel."

Formerly the Shire Hall, the Grade II-listed Edwardian building, in Reading's Forbury Square, cost The Waterbridge Group £6million to convert.

And the sense of opulence for the guests is accentuated by beautifully designed bathrooms in each of the 24 bedrooms.

Mr Hunter explained: "We wanted something extra special for the hotel's bathrooms.

"I was so impressed by stoneCIRCLE's work at my home that I just had to commission their craftsmen to produce the stonework in The Forbury Hotel.

"The bathrooms are designed to be timeless and romantic, and stoneCIRCLE worked seamlessly with our designers to produce marvellous single-piece double-ended baths and walk-in showers, stone floors and walls.

"The result even exceeded my high expectations."

Mr Vanhinsbergh said he was delighted with the end result, adding: "The hotel is stunning, with marvellous attention to detail throughout. I'm very proud that stoneCIRCLE has played a part in it.

"We worked closely with the architects and designers early in the project and were able to manufacture and carve the Italian Trevisan stone long before the installation commenced.

"We produced the vanity and bath tops, and carved solid shower trays and basins, to produce a clean and contemporary look."

The high-quality precision work comes down to the latest equipment that stoneCIRCLE uses for its commissions, which range from natural stone tiling to decorative stone ornaments, and from customised shower units and basins to kitchen worktops.

Had the same opportunity come along 10 years ago, Mr Vanhinsbergh said the quality and precision of the work would have been very different.

He explained: "We would probably have had to do the work with a man with an angle grinder. In fact, we probably wouldn't have taken the job on."

Recent commissions undertaken by the company, which is part of B&V Masonry, have included producing gargoyles for the Royal Academy's Burlington House and the National Police Memorial, in London, the installation of 10 bathrooms at Hackwood House, in Basingstoke, and the Newbury Timeline Mosaic, which can be seen in front of the town's library.
