Paul May September 5th, 2020
I was saddened to hear of the death of my old friend, Nigel Billington.

I met Nigel in December 1963, when I began working for Appleby and Ireland Ltd in Basingstoke. We both served five year engineering apprenticeships with the firm and became good friends. We shared a mutual enthusiasm for jazz and blues, motor sport and practical jokes. We learnt our trade, and had many laughs on the way, before moving to other companies and temporarily losing touch.

Some years later we met again and enjoyed evenings at Basingstoke Blues Club and local pubs. This was after Nigel’s initial heart surgery in the USA, following which he had several serious recurrences plus treatment for cancer. When he talked about these experiences he always made light of them; his sense of humour never deserted him and there was never a hint of self-pity. He was a good listener and, regardless of his health problems, always remained an optimist. For these and other qualities, I admired him greatly and shall miss his company.

I extend my sincere sympathies to Nigel’s family and his close friends.

Paul May, Kempshott, Basingstoke.
