AN HISTORICAL society which has been working to unearth details of the lives of soldiers who died during the First World War is to unveil its findings at a special exhibition.

Tadley and District History Society will be commemorating the start of the conflict with the event at Tadley Community Centre on Saturday, September 27.

Members of the historical society have been hard at work building up the personal profiles of each of the 31 men listed on the Tadley War Memorial.

They have secured details and photographs of the servicemen after making contact with a number of relatives of those named on the memorial.

These relatives have been invited to attend the exhibition, which will run between 10am and 5pm.

The society has been able to track down details of all but one of the men listed on the memorial.

Private A Rampton has been identified through his medal index card as being Alfred Rampton but to date his family and Tadley connections remain elusive, and nothing is known of the fallen soldier.

The exhibition at the community centre, in Newchurch Road, will also give a feel for what life was like in Tadley at the time of the outbreak of the war and will include displays by local schools and organisations.

Admission to the event is free and light refreshments will be available.
