BASINGSTOKE Town wrapped up their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 loss at Salisbury City.

The Dragons will now focus on making it a winning start to their Southern League Premier Division campaign, when Frome are the visitors on Saturday.

Town travelled to Wiltshire to face one of the Southern League Division One title favourites, knowing this would be one of their toughest games to date.

The visitors lined-up with Callum Adden in goal with Rob Atkinson back in centre of defence alongside Shane Hollamby and Dan Bayliss, while they had their usual wing backs Marcus Johnson-Schuster and George Bennett.

Michael Atkinson was back in midfield, with Charlie Kennedy and Charlie McCann, while Aaron Jarvis and Ben Wright played up front.

Town won the first corner of the game early on and Wright’s flag kick was met by Rob Atkinson’s head, but it was straight at Salisbury goalkeeper Charlie Searle.

The visitors then went close again from Bennett’s free-kick, which Jarvis headed over the bar.

The home side replied by taking the lead after 32 minutes, as Mark Francis forced his way into the box and scored with a shot to the near post.

Town tried to hit back winning a corner and Jarvis also fired wide.

Salisbury then doubled their advantage on 42 minutes as Callum Hart’s great ball was headed on by Marvin Brooks and Francis slotted home, for his second of the game.

For the start of the second half, Town changed their formation to 4-3-3, as Rob Atkinson moved into midfield and Sam Smart replaced McCann.

Town had the first chance of the second period as Jarvis went one-on-one with the home goalkeeper, but after this they produced few clear-cut chances accept for a late effort from Wright as the home side won the game 2-0. The previous Wednesday, Town were beaten 2-1 at Leatherhead, after Wright had given them the lead.
