BASINGSTOKE Town recorded back to back home wins with a 1-0 success over visiting Hitchin on Saturday afternoon.

Manager Terry Brown made three changes to the side which beat Stratford in mid-week, with Dan Collier, Jack McKnight and Ben Wright all returning to the starting XI in place of Callum Bunting, Michael Atkinson and Sam Smart.

The home side were out of the blocks quickly and took the lead, with what turned out to be the winner after just four minutes.

George Bennett sent in a free-kick from distance into the Hitchin penalty area. The visitors failed to clear the ball and centre half Guri Demuria popped up to score with an excellent volley.

Six minutes later, the visiting goalkeeper Michael Johnson was called into action to save from Jack McKnight’s header after another Bennett free-kick.

Soon after, a Town corner saw Sam Agent go down in the box, but no penalty was given.

On 26 minutes, Ben Wright, who scored with a free-kick in Town’s last game, had another go from just outside the area. He managed to get the ball over the wall but Johnson made an excellent save to keep it out.

With few clear cut chances after that Town headed to the dressing room at half-time leading 1-0.

After an even start to the second half, the visitors started to increase the pressure as they looked for an equaliser.

On the hour mark, Hitchin’s Charles Smith’s effort was dealt with by a good save from Colm McAdden.

The visitors had the better of the later stages of the game, as Lucas Fitzpatrick whipped in the ball from a corner which the home side were able to clear.

Dan Webb also had a shot from distance, but his effort went over the bar, as Town held on to win 1-0 and continue their great home record with win number 11.

This Saturday, they have their longest trip of the season to title chasing King’s Lynn, who are one of the few teams to have won at the Camrose this season.
