BASINGSTOKE Town turned on the six appeal at the Camrose, with Sam Argent their five star man once again in a real goal feast.

The Town striker collected his second five goal tally following on from Dunstable earlier in the season, as the home side dished out a 6-2 thrashing on visiting play-off hopefuls Tiverton.

Town welcomed Ashleigh Artwell back into their ranks and were quickly out of the blocks gaining a corner in the opening minute, which was cleared.

The home side certainly adjusted better to the conditions and bossed the first 45 minutes.

They took the lead in the ninth minute from the penalty spot.

This was after Argent was brought down by goalkeeper Martin Rice, which earned him a yellow card.

The visiting shot stopper dived one way and Argent put the ball in the opposite bottom corner.

After this the excellent George Bennett fired a shot over and then had an effort blocked when found by Callum Bunting.

Artwell had a shot blocked in the box, before a rare Tiverton chance saw Levi Landricombe’s free-kick hit the wall and go out for a corner.

Just before the interval, the home side so nearly got a second, but Bunting’s effort was deflected wide after good work from Bennett and Sam Smart.

The home side took just four minutes to extend their lead after the break, as Argent was clipped by Michael Landricombe, as he just got into the area.

Another penalty was awarded, but with Tiverton’s River Allen down injured, Argent had to wait a few minutes before he could take his second spot kick.

Even with the added pressure of a time delay and the goalkeeper diving the right way, Argent’s kick found the back of the net.

The home side then added a third on 54 minutes, as Smart produced a lovely ball across to Argent who fired low into the net.

Just after the hour mark, Tiverton goalie Rice produced a great save with his legs to deny Bunting, after good work from Bennett and Artwell.

On 72 minutes, Argent added his and Basingstoke’s fourth, with what he felt was his best goal of the game. Bennett struck a free-kick from distance and Argent headed home at the back post.

Just two minutes later and the striker popped up again to tap home his fifth of the game, from a nice ball from Smart to make it 5-0.

Despite being five goals down Tiverton continued to attack and Colm McAdden produced a great save to deny Levi Landricombe, before Jared Levington bundled the ball home from a corner on 77 minutes.

Any hopes of a comeback was short lived as some nice play from Artwell found Bennett on the edge of the box and he capped a great game with a lovely strike.

The home side came looking for number seven with Jack McKnight’s shot pushed over.

Tiverton sub Jordan Rogers then saw his shot pushed away by McAdden before the visitors added their second of the game in the 92nd minute, as Lewington prodded home his second of the game.

After the match Town manager Terry Brown said: “It was a fantastic victory against a side who are doing well in this league. Of course, Sam Argent is the man of the match because of his five goals, but I felt Callum Bunting was excellent too today, with his hold up play for the team.

“It is disappointing to concede two, but I would rather win 6-2 than 2-0 and I am sure the fans enjoyed the game today.”

Next for Town is a trip to Biggleswade on Saturday.
