BASINGSTOKE Town suffered their second defeat of the season at Dorchester Town, as they were knocked out of the FA Trophy in the first qualifying round.

The two sides had played out a 1-1 draw at the Camrose on Tuesday night, and earlier in the season Basingstoke lost 1-0 at the Avenue.

This time in Dorset, the Magpies came out on top again winning 2-1.

Basingstoke manager Terry Brown made three changes to Tuesday’s side with Tim Wohlfiel, George Bennett and Dan Collier all coming in for Leslie Sackey, Guri Demuria and Ashleigh Artwell.

With no Demuria, this meant Charlie Kennedy played as a centre back, alongside Shane Hollamby.

The visitors began on the front foot as speedy winger Sam Smart raided down the left and struck a deflected effort, that just evaded Ben Wright at the back post, with the resultant corner coming to nothing.

Dorchester took their time to settle but Aaron Rodriguez created what proved to be the home side’s best moment of the first half, when his mazy dribble into the area was thwarted by Colm McAdden in the Dragons’ goal.

With 15 minutes gone, Basingstoke were establishing themselves as the dominant side and they were unlucky not to score with two excellent opportunities in a minute.

First, Hollamby rose highest to power a header against the unknowing Chris Weale from a pinpoint Wright corner, before Smart flicked a header from six yards just wide.

Sam Argent was the creator for Basingstoke’s next two chances, with Dorchester unable to stem the constant flow of attacks. Argent curled a weak effort at Weale shortly before a backheel set up George Bennett, who shot across goal.

Argent was the architect of another chance soon after, gliding past Ross Carmichael in the area with a flurry of step-overs and crossing for Wright to thump a volley into the side-netting from an angle.

At the break, Rory Fallon’s debut ended due to a hamstring injury and he was replaced by Ormrod. Against the run of play, Ormrod put the Magpies in front moments after a Sam Lanahan header was saved by McAdden.

Lanahan was the creator of the goal, getting to the byline and crossing for Ormrod, who smashed home from six yards after 52 minutes.

Basingstoke almost levelled four minutes later, but Bennett’s 20-yard half-volley was saved.

The goal transformed Dorchester’s play and they doubled their advantage after a piece of good fortune.

An attempted clearance ricocheted off Mohammed Baghdadi, into the path of Lanahan, who was fouled by Hollamby for a penalty.

It was left to Ormrod to calmly score from the spot kick, sending McAdden the wrong way.

As the half wore on, Lanahan had a greater influence on proceedings and he was again picked out by a fabulous Rodriguez cross, only to see his header comfortably saved by McAdden.

The Magpies’ excellent second-half display was almost disrupted, when Smart beat Carmichael easily before picking out sub Sackey, but he blazed well wide.

The visitors did earn a consolation deep into injury-time, when Argent stooped to head home a Bennett free-kick for a deserved goal, but that proved to be the last kick of the game as the Dragons were knocked out.

Basingstoke are back in league action next Saturday, with a trip to King’s Langley.
