BASINGSTOKE Town Ladies were unable to get the better of runaway Southern League Premier Division winners Maidenhead United on Sunday, losing out to a solitary goal scored just before the break.

Maidenhead put two decent chances over the crossbar in the early stages, while Lianne Hill was the first to go close for Town, forcing a save out of the visiting goalkeeper.

Zoe Clifford scored a well-taken goal to put the leaders ahead on 42 minutes and while Basingstoke pushed forward after the break, they were unable to find an equaliser. Lindsey Beverley shot narrowly wide and Ayala Truelove saw her effort excellently saved, with several other opportunities snuffed out by the visiting defence.

The result saw Maidenhead clinch the title. Town remain second going into their final game, a trip to Parley Sports Ladies on Sunday, but the teams below them have games in hand.
