JASON Bristow insists that he is the right man to lead Basingstoke Town, despite his side’s terrible start to the season.

The Dragons are yet to win and sit bottom of National League South after taking just four points from their opening 10 games – their joint-worst start to a Conference South campaign.

They conceded eight goals over the course of two games last weekend and have now lost four of their last five.

At the same point last season, Town were flying high near the top of the table with 21 points. This year, they are already 15 points outside the play-off places.

It’s a bad state of affairs – and manager Bristow admits that he is feeling the strain.

“I do feel under pressure,” he said. “It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t, having gone 10 games without a win.

“I’m the first to admit that the current situation is not acceptable. I need to take it on my shoulders, keep working hard and make something happen.

“You have got to take the good with the bad, and it is bad at the moment. I have not known a run like this before, but I back myself.

“I believe that I am the right person for the job, but nobody is bigger than the club and I know that the people in charge will make a change if it is the right thing to do.”

However, while there is a palpable sense of frustration around the Camrose at the moment, Bristow seems to have retained the support of the majority of directors and supporters.

“Within the club, the support has always been there,” he added. “The supporters have a right to be upset at the moment, but the majority see that we are working hard to change things.

“It’s not happening at the moment, but if they stick by us, we will repay them.”

Town’s next chance to end their winless run comes on Saturday (3pm), when they host a Wealdstone side who sit 20th in the table.

The west London club have won just one league game this season, but they are unbeaten in four games and beat CB Hounslow 9-0 in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup on Tuesday.

Basingstoke are in action at The Camrose again next Tuesday, when Farnborough are due to visit in the Hampshire Senior Cup (7.45pm).

Town will be without midfielders Jamie Brown and Simon Dunn for both games. Brown is still struggling with a hip problem, while Dunn was forced off with a hamstring problem during Monday’s defeat at St Albans.

Basingstoke have been drawn at home to Slough Town in the second qualify-ing round of the FA Cup.

Slough currently sit 18th in the Southern League Premier Division, but Bristow is expecting a difficult afternoon.

“Slough are a very organised and hard-working side, so they will be tough to beat,” he said. “They will be underdogs, but it’s a tie that will excite them.”
