BASINGSTOKE Town have moved swiftly to issue a ban to a supporter who admitted to posting homophobic messages on Twitter.

The club was contacted by officials from Whitehawk on Saturday night, after homophobic Tweets were sent from an account with the handle @BSEYouth. The account and messages have since been deleted.

Simon Hood, director of marketing at Basingstoke, said: "The culprit got in contact with us, handing himself in. As he is a minor, we spoke to his parents and he is banned from the play-off games.

"We took action within 15 minutes of the tweets being reported to us and it's something we plan to keep a close eye on moving forward.

"As a club, we condemn any action like that and would like to distance ourselves from any Twitter account other than the official Basingstoke Town account."

Town players showed their support for anti-homophobia group Stonewall earlier this season, wearing rainbow coloured laces.

Hood added: "We have shown our support for the campaign to rid football of homophobia.

"We will do all we can to stamp out any sort of discrimination, whether it's on the terraces or on social media, and there will be more bans if things like this happen in the future."
