BASINGSTOKE Town manager Jason Bristow insists that he will not be rushed into making signings.

Striker Manny Williams penned a new contract at the Camrose on Sunday, meaning that goalkeeper Joe McDonnell is the only member of last season’s squad whose future remains unclear.

The young ’keeper is likely to get a dream move to a Football League club in the next couple of weeks, leaving Bristow with just 11 players signed on for next season.

However, while he concedes that he will need to make more signings, the Town boss says he has learned lessons from the way he recruited players last season and is prepared to be more patient this time around.

“We have to make sure that we bring in the right players this year,” Bristow said. “We are speaking to a couple of people at the moment but there is no rush.

“If the right players come up, then we will see, but if not, then we are happy to wait until pre-season.

“If five or six players then impress during pre-season, we will see what we can do for them, but if there are only three or four, that is not a problem either.

“There is no pressure to sign players just to fill the bench, because we will have 40 or 50 players in the academy.”

Bristow says that he has “irons in the fire” in the event that McDonnell does move on, while he would probably like to bring in one more defender, one or two midfielders and at least one more striker.

Williams, who has scored 25 goals in 66 appearances for Town, became the second forward to sign for the club at the weekend.

Bristow said: “Last season, Manny didn’t score as many goals as I’m sure he would have liked, but he is an integral part of the team and really improves our attacking options.

“We are delighted that he is back for another year, and with Liam Enver-Marum already signed up, hopefully the future looks good in terms of goals.

“Two strikers is not enough to start the season with though. We will need another one, or even two, and we have a couple of strikers who have been playing in lower divisions coming to pre-season to show what they can do.”
