JOSH Goodall has vowed to use his success at Wimbledon last week as the springboard for the rest of the summer season and beyond.
The Basingstoke-born player, along with his partner Jamie Delgado, pulled off only the second British victory of this year’s Championship when they were victorious in their men’s doubles match on Wednesday afternoon.
The Brits took the scalps of world top 20 player Nicholas Almagro and his Spanish compatriot Santiago Ventura, winning 5-7, 7-6, 6-1, 6-3.
On Friday, the Brits had no luck as they were beaten 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 by number four seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi.
However, Goodall can hold his head up high as did not lose his serve in the match against a pairing who were beaten finalists in 2003 and are in good form.
Talking at Wimbledon to The Gazette, Goodall said: “This has been a good Wimbledon for me as I have beaten one of the top 20 players in world and held my serve against a top-five pair in the world.
“Obviously I am disappointed we lost and Delgado felt he could have played better. They did not give us any chances, but I will take the positives from both matches and look to build on that for the rest of the year and look to get my singles ranking back up.”
The Basingstoke-born player has currently slipped down to a world ranking of 397 but he is hoping to reduce this to 270 by late August to give him a shot at the US Open qualifiers at Flushing Meadows.
Goodall said: “I am heading to Manchester next week to play in a Futures event on grass and will then finish the grass court season here before hopefully heading to the States for some Challengers tournaments ahead of US qualifiers.
“My illness last year has left me playing catch-up with my rankings. I have also lost so many matches in three sets. If I had been able to win a few of them, my ranking would be a lot higher.”
