Totally impressed!

JUDY Murray – mother of British number one tennis star Andy Murray – praised the facilities at Totally Tennis when she held a masterclass there this week.

The Monday session was for students of Queen Mary’s College and was part of their prize for winning the mixed doubles crown at the AEGON Team Tennis Schools Senior Students final in Bolton earlier this year.

The winning team of Ben Jubin, Stephanie Catlin, Jack Nicholson and Aimee Paterson, who are all are Totally Tennis performance players, were joined by nine other QMC tennis team members for the brilliant experience.

Murray, a respected coach, spent an hour putting all the students through various tennis drills.

She said: “This is a fabulous facility and I have been very impressed with it. As well as the outdoor courts, there is also the newly-re-laid indoor ones which, with the weather in this country, are so important so you can play all-year round.

“There is also the drive and commitment of the coaches led by Nigel (Long) which makes this tennis centre so successful.”

She added: “To improve the level of players in this country, we need more facilities like this promoting park tennis which is affordable to all. Getting more people to play tennis at grassroots level is the way to improve the game from top to bottom.”

Her son Andy will be in action next week at the French Open, followed by Queens and Wimbledon – meaning a stressful time is coming up for her.

Murray said: “I wear my heart on my sleeve and play every point. Andy is going to be seeded four for both tournaments and I am sure he will give it his best shot.

“There is a lot of depth in the men’s game right now, but I will be there supporting him and his brother Jamie.”
