SILCHESTER performance tennis player, Hannah Smith rounded off a successful winter tennis season winning the National Tour final at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, London.

This means Smith will go into the this summer’s season as Britain’s number one ranked girl at 12 and under.

The tournament at Roehampton saw the top 16 British girls qualify and Smith dropped just one set on her way to victory.

Her successful run started with wins over Oriana Parkins-Godwin (Surrey) 6-4,6-0, Mary Hoggard (Warwickshire) 6-2, 6-1.This set-up a semi-final clash with second seed player Olivia Rook from Gloucestershire which Smith won 6-3:6-4.

In the final the Silchester player lost the opening set 7-5 to Nottinghamshire’s Millie May Matthews, but stormed back winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-0 to take the title.

Back in January, Smith represented Great Britain as part of the national team competing at the 2016 Tennis Europe Winter Cup, held in Neudorfl, Austria.

She was part of the team that qualified for the European finals held in February against Russia, France, Turkey, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Romania and Ukraine, and they finished seventh overall.

Smith then flew out to France to compete in the Tennis Europe Super 12 Cup for GB, reaching the quarter finals in the 12 and under girls event, losing to the eventual winner.

In the doubles event, Smith teamed up with fellow British player Andrea Pineada to win her second Tennis Europe title this year.

The Brits did not drop a set on their way to victory beating two French pairs, a German and Canadian par, before a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sofia Costoulos and Hanne Vandewinkel from Belgium.
