ODIHAM tennis star Ryan Golesworthy won the under-14 boys singles crown at the Grade 3 Christmas and New Year tennis tournament held at the David Lloyd centre in Southampton.

This is one of Hampshire’s most popular tournaments and categories include boys and girls from under-eights to under-16s and it includes doubles and adult events.

Entries to the tournament included the cream of Hampshire tennis competing against other counties, as well as entries from as far afield as Belgium and Ireland.

Odiham’s tennis ace, Golesworthy was the number one seed in the under-14 boys singles.

He kicked off the tournament with a match against a player who had travelled from Belgium, Konrad Branwhite. Golesworthy was in fine fettle and breezed through the match winning 6-0, 6-0.

He then beat Hampshire rival from PortsmouthJames Midgley 6-2, 6-1 and this set-up a clash with fifth seed from Surrey, Vraj Patel. Golesworthy produced a great performance as he booked his place in the last four of the tournament as he won 6-1, 6-0.

His semi-final was against Middlesex player Nikolai Marin and this proved to a long drawn out match with Golesworthy winning it in the third set tie break, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.

The tournament seeding ran true to form, with Golesworthy facing second seed and Hampshire team mate Cameron Clarke in the final.

Those watching the final were treated to some great tennis with both boys battling to win. In the end Golesworthy took the title with the scoreline reading 6-3, 6-2.

Golesworthy also made it as far as the quarter finals in the under-16 boys event and the finals of the under-14 boys doubles with Cameron Clarke and under-16s with Callum Rendle.
