MATT Jones was a double winner at the annual singles and doubles tournaments held at Basingstoke’s Waverley Lawn Tennis Club.

The grass courts of the Fairfields Road club attracted players from right across the world, with people travelling from across Europe and from as far afield as India and China to take part.

The two weeks of competition started with a doubles qualifying tournament.

A week later, there was a singles competition at the same venue and over 40 players enjoyed two days of competitive tennis played in excellent weather.

Jones won the singles crown thanks to a 6-3 victory over Simon Mennear.

A week later, he teamed up with Christelle Kerloc’h to take the doubles title with a 6-1 victory over Daryl Blair and Curtis Riddell in the final.

The singles competition was played over short sets, which gave the players plenty of tennis against varying opponents.

The doubles was played in the American format, with everyone building individual scores to progress to the final.

The events doubled up as open days, allowing players to look around the facilities the club offers and have a go at playing tennis.

The club would like to thank everyone who helped out on both days of competition as well as the players who took part in both events and made it such a success.

Planning has already started for next year’s competition.
