YOUNG Silchester tennis star Hannah Smith helped Great Britain 11 and under girls to victory against France in a tournament held at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.

Four girls made up the GB team and they came out on top after winning 13 matches to the visitors’ five.

Smith was the number two seed for the team and on day one of the tournament, she played singles matches against the French number one and two.

The Daneshill School pupil took the first set against France’s best player 7-5, but then lost the second set 6-2 and went down narrowly in a third set tie-breaker.

In her second match, against the French number two, Smith eased to a 6-1 success in the first set, then lost the second 7-5, before winning the match 11-9 in a third set tie-break.

The following day, the 10-year-old played the third and fourth seeded French players. She lost the first match 6-2, 6-4, but won the other 6-3, 6-1.

Smith then teamed up with Andrea Pinaeda, a pairing that won the National 10 and under doubles champion-ships last year.

They convincingly won both doubles matches against France.

In total the Silchester ace played six matches, winning four, helping Great Britain to victory.
