BEVERLEY Cleaver and Jamie Thomas both enjoyed double success at the annual Old Basing Lawn Tennis Club finals day.

Cleaver won the mixed and ladies’ doubles titles, while Thomas took the men’s singles and doubles crowns.

Cleaver and mixed doubles partner Phil Dixon beat Andy Mountford and Penny Luke 7-6, 6-2 after a keenly contested first set tie-break, which the winners won 7-4.

Cleaver’s other title came with Sue Willcock, as they raced away to a 6-1 first set victory over Luke and Lisa Allen.

Their opponents hit back, taking the second set, but unfortunately Allen sustained a back injury in the final set and had to retire with Cleaver and Willcock leading 4-1.

In the men’s singles final, the height (6ft 6in), youth (20 years) and athleticism of Brunel University student Thomas made it hard for Mark Hammond to win any games as he won 6-2, 6-2.

In the men’s doubles final, Thomas teamed up with Andy Mountford and the younger pair beat Mark Hammond and Mike Chamberlain 6-0, 6-0.

The ladies’ title went to teenager Jemma Godleman, who had to work hard to defeat Chris Fowler, as the 6-3, 6-1 score did not reflect the competitive nature of the match.

The junior singles final saw 11-year-old Marcus Robertson make Ellis Wyles, five years his senior, work hard for his title despite the 6-0, 6-1 result.

The men’s doubles handicapped title saw Charles Robertson and Mark Fuller beat teenagers Alex Wood and Richard Ineson 6-1, 6-4.

The ladies’ doubles handicapped crown was played up to eight games, which saw Lynne Thomas and Tina Wood come back from 5-3 down to win 8-5 over Jan Petto and Jemma Godleman.

The trophies were presented by Mike Sant, while club chairman Chris Jones thanked everyone for their help, especially Clive and Heather Mountford, who organised the tournament.
