WAVERLEY’S Kelsey Mosquera won both the ladies’ singles and mixed doubles titles at the annual Basingstoke and District Tennis League finals held at Beechdown.

Mosquera, the defending singles champion, retained her title 6-1, 6-2, after some exciting baseline rallies with Overton’s Lucy Battersby.

The Waverley player then teamed up with clubmate Luke Watts to take on home pair Andrea Butcher and Chris Harrold in the mixed doubles and came out on top 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

In the men’s singles final, defending champion Malcolm McPhail, from Waverley, played Old Basing’s Phil Dixon.

The first set was a very tight affair, with both players making each other cover the court.

It was decided by a tie-break that McPhail won 7-3 and a break of serve in the eighth game of the second set saw the Waverley player retain his title by winning the set 6-3.

The men’s doubles title also saw defending champions Chris Pearce and Dan Cole from Kingsclere triumph. They defeated Old Basing’s Dixon and Rob Still 6-3, 7-5.

Home pairing Andrea Butcher and Clare Munns took on defending champions Battersby and Zoe Taylor from Overton in the ladies’ doubles final.

The champions took the first set 6-3, but the turning point of the match came when Beechdown, trailing 3-1 in second set, won the next nine games to win the title 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

The league would like to thank the Beechdown club for their hospitality and use of facilities on the day.
