ODIHAM tennis ace Ryan Golesworthy enjoyed great success in the under-12 Boys Singles Grade Three Maidenhead tournament.

The Robert May’s student blasted his way through his first match, winning 6-0, 6-0, before winning his quarter final 6-2, 6-1, beating players from Berkshire and Hertford-shire respectively.

The semi-final was a high-quality match with Goles-worthy up against Cambridgeshire’s Derick Chen.

In the first set, the Odiham player was 6-5 down before he regained the initiative and won the tie break and then took the second set 7-5.

The final was a lot more one-sided as Golesworthy was in rampant form, dropping only one game as he beat Middlesex player Nikolai Marin 6-1, 6-0 to take the title.

In the under-14s boys doubles tournament, also at Maidenhead, Golesworthy was played up an age group – but he and partner Jake Norris won their semi-final 6-1, 6-1.

The doubles final was tightly contested against Berkshire’s Oliver Hills and Oliver Okonkwo, but the Hampshire pair played well. Norris was on great form with his powerful serves, which allowed Golesworthy to intercept at the net as they won the final 6-4, 6-2.

Golesworthy, ranked number one under-12 in Hampshire and 12th nationally, has recently been training at the prestigious Sánchez-Casal Tennis Academy in Barcelona, where Andy Murray trained.

Golesworthy spent time on the clay courts being coached by Academy co-founder Sergio Casal.

Talking about the experience, Golesworthy said: “I loved my time on the clay in Barcelona. The standard of tennis was very high and they have great coaches.

“Everyone was smiling and enjoying their tennis. It was great hitting with Sergio and he gave me lots of advice and encouragement.

He added: “I’ll be trying to put what he told me into practice during the summer. He explained the difference in how the Spanish look at and play tennis.”
