| Borough mayor Councillor Warwick Lovegrove presents Danni Bird with the Senior Women's award |
ONE of the rising stars of women's football, Danni Bird, certainly scored when she won the senior women's crown.
The Bramley-based winger, who studies at Loughborough University, plays for England under-23 as well as Birmingham City.
Last year saw 21-year-old Bird captain the England team in the World Student Games in China. She said: "That was a great honour and one of those experiences I won't forget."
Speaking about her award, Bird said: "I am so chuffed as this is the first time I have ever been to the awards, so I was never expecting to win."
At the beginning of this year, Bird was called up to a full England training squad in Spain and her aim now is to fight her way into the side. The footballer said: "My current ambition is to make the full England squad for the Euro 2009 finals."
Powerlifter Jean Maton finished second in the senior women category while biathlon star Michelle Matson came third.
