LONDON Irish failed to book a place in the last four of the European Challenge Cup as they were knocked out by Edinburgh 23-18 on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors raced into a 16-0 lead thanks WP Nel’s converted try and three penalties from Sam Hidalgo-Clyne.

The home side hit back before the break from Shane Geraghty penalty and a try from Conor Gilsenan which made it 16-10 at the break.

The Exiles took the lead after the interval as Scott Steele scored, but a converted try from Edinburgh’s Fraser McKenzie put the Scottish side ahead again.

The home side through they had won the contest right at the end of the contest as prop David Paice went over the line, but the television match official could not see a grounding so the visitors held on to win.

Irish return to Premiership action on Sunday when they entertain Sale (kick-off 3pm).
