CHINEHAM Lions RFC enjoyed their first victory of their Hampshire Two campaign as they beat visiting Aldershot and Fleet 8-5.

With Chineham’s May’s Bounty pitch unplayable from the start of the week it meant they travelled to Down Grange for this game.

The visitors fielded a much changed side from the reverse fixture and the game proved to be equally different, the high scoring and end to end affair of the first fixture was replaced with a cagey fixture.

Chineham took an early lead when Aldershot’s ill-discipline gave Douglas Ireland the chance to convert a penalty to which he duly obliged.

Chineham then spent the rest of the first half with the Lion’s share of the possession, only a combination of dogged defence and the wrong pass at the wrong time prevented Chineham from further capitalising.

After the break Chineham went into the now famous 20 minute lull and allowed the visitors back into the game, A&F were however but they were unable to convert territory into points as home defence held firm.

Tempers frayed slightly and Chineham lost Stu Peake for 10 minute spell.
This unsettled the Chineham set piece, allowing Aldershot to develop some territory and exert pressure on the home side.

The Lions recovered once they were back to a full complement and their hold on the game was confirmed when after strong work from the Chineham pack John Lingham powered over to score and Spenser missed the extras.

Chineham saw out the game with determined defence and good game management. Aldershot managed to grab a try five minutes from time, but failed to add the extras.

Chineham travel to Farnborough on Saturday hoping to develop a winning streak.

HOOK and Odiham RFC got off to the start against Farnborough seconds with an early try within the first five minutes from Phil Waite.

The wind was on Hook and Odiham’s side in the first half and the team made the most of this to put pressure on the opposition.

This quickly led to a second try from one of the Stags’ top scorers, Tom Hopkins. Waite then converted, giving them a 12-0 lead.

The visitors then switched off and an immediate reply saw Farnborough’s winger made a break through the field for a converted try.

Hook’s concentration levels then picked up again. The end of the first half saw two further tries being scored, the first by Waite and the second by forward Terry Robson leaving the score at 22-7 at the break.

A number of half time substitutions gave a new lease of life to the Stags. Scrum half Adam Maglashan scored the first try of this half, converted again by Waite.

Farnborough kept the pressure on but with 10 minutes to go Tom Hopkins was away down the side line scoring to extend Hook’s lead.

The home side completed the match scoring and Hook and Odiham won 34-12 in Solent Three.
