HAMPSHIRE finished bottom of their County Championship group after losing 34-12 to Somerset at Down Grange on Saturday.
However, they look set to avoid the drop from division two south as there is no relegation under the current rulings.
Somerset raced into an early 10-0 lead, but David Bates' converted try got the home side back into the game.
Two tries either side of half-time won the game for the visitors, putting them 27-7 ahead.
Hampshire crossed the line for a second time through full-back Michael Le Bourgeois but Somerset sealed the win with a try five minutes from time.
