QUEEN Mary’s College just missed out on a double success when they hosted the Hampshire Colleges rugby finals.

QMC won the plate competition, but their second string were unable to win the Bowl, losing in the final.

The college’s first team won a hard-fought Plate encounter as they beat Peter Symonds’ second string 12-0.

In the bowl final, the QMC second team produced a great comeback against Havant College with 19 unanswered points, but they came up short as they lost the game 21-19.

To reach their finals, the first team beat Farnborough 31-7 in the semi-finals, while the seconds overcame Portsmouth VI 19-0.

The first team opened the competition in fine form, with a 31-0 win over Portsmouth VI.

This was followed by a 31-12 loss to Peter Symonds College, but they won their next two games against Barton Peveril 24-7 and Itchen College 37-0.

Their final pool game was against the best team at the event, Brockenhurst, and it saw the home side lose 35-5.

The second team started their campaign with a hard fought 5-5 draw against last year’s cup winners Portsmouth Grammar School.

They then narrowly lost to Alton 15-14 and Farnborough 14-5, before recording a 22-0 victory over Havant.

Their final pool game saw a poor performance as they suffered a 33-7 loss.

After the bowl and plate finals, the tournament was completed with the cup final, which saw Brockenhurst beat Peter Symonds 26-5.
