LONDON Irish beat bottom-of-the-table London Welsh 24-9 on Boxing Day to record their first Premiership win in three months.

Visiting Welsh scored the first points of the game from the boot of Will Robinson, but a Tom Homer penalty soon levelled the scores and Alex Lewington’s try had Irish ahead, with Homer adding the extras.

Both sides then lost a man to red cards, with Irish’s Dan Leo sent off for his reaction after being elbowed by Tom May, who also received his marching orders.

Robinson reduced the gap to four points at half-time with his second penalty, but Geoff Cross bundled his way over to extend the Irish lead after the break, Homer again adding the extras.

Robinson’s third penalty made it 17-6, but Tom Court’s try, which was converted by Homer, made the game safe, though Irish were unable to score again, missing out on the bonus point as a result.

The result saw the Exiles move up a place to 10th in the Premiership table ahead of a trip to Saracens on Saturday.
