LONDON Irish moved to the top of their European Challenge Cup pool after an excellent 34-23 win over the visiting Cardiff Blues.

The boot of Exiles’ Tom Horner opened the scoring, only for the Welsh side to reply with a converted try from Cory Allen.

Two more penalties from Horner moved Irish back in front and then Andrew Fenby scored his first of two tries to extend the lead to 16-7.

This was reduced by two penalties from Gareth Anscombe, but the Exiles still led by three at the break.

Seven minutes after the re-start, Shane Geraghty charged down an Anscombe kick to go in for another score and a Horner penalty made it 26-13.

The boot of Anscombe reduced the lead again, but Fenby’s second try of the game and another Horner penalty made it 34-16.

An Anscombe penalty and try reduced the lead, but Irish held on to take the victory.

The Exiles are next in action away at Wasps on Sunday (kick-off 2pm).
