BASINGSTOKE RFC Griffins ran in 12 tries, as they hammered Southampton II 80-0.

’Stoke started strongly, putting together some great phases, before full back Neil Warner crossed the line for the first try of the day.

Soon after, Alan Sturgess finished off some great slow ball phases, by barrelling over from all of six inches out.

This was followed by two quick tries from David Lewis and Brent Evans, taking the score to 26-0 at half time.

Southampton worked hard all afternoon, but they found it difficult to live with the well drilled Griffins outfit and were kept camped in their own 22.

The tries kept coming as Brent Evans, Steve Briggs, Adam Angell all scored and Joe Newbold went over twice.

The pick of which was his 60-yard kick-off return, where the in-form winger danced his way around five defenders to power over the line.

Returning fly half Jason Jacob got in on the scoring act late on along with Dave Wheeler.

Jacob kicked nine conversions and David Ashford also converted one try.

All in all it was a superb display of rugby from Basingstoke, the final score being 80-0 to the visitors.

Coach Steve Parker said: “I am delighted with the result. We worked hard in training this week to put right a few of the things from the Millbrook game.

“This gets our league campaign back on track and if we can keep this side together, playing rugby like this, we are going to be hard to stop.”

This weekend, the Griffins are away at Isle of Wight II, the Cavaliers travel to Winchester Vets, while the fifths team play Ryde.
