BASINGSTOKE RFC won a thriller at Chobham on Saturday, to end the home side’s 100 per cent start in London One South.

’Stoke hit back from being 17-13 down to lead 37-36 with two minutes remaining, but Chobham still had time to mount one final attack and were given a penalty 40 metres out.

With the pressure building, their kicker James Dunne sent the ball towards the uprights, only for it to hit the post which gave victory to the visitors.

Earlier in the contest, Dunne kicked his side into the lead after a minute with penalty, only for Tim Richards to open the Basingstoke account with a try.

The Surrey side were next on the scoreboard, as Josh Devitt scored and Dunne converted for a 10-5 lead.

A Ryan Trevaskis penalty narrowed the lead to two points, Chobham’s Pete Walsh then went over and Dunne added the extras to make it 17-8.

Matt Guilfoyle made sure ’Stoke, who had dominated possession and territory, stayed in the contest with his side’s second try to make it 17-13 at the break.

Chobham took just five minutes to add to their tally after the interval, as Dan Mays scored a try and Dunne converted.

Just three minutes later, ’Stoke opened their account for the half as Trevaskis scored.

Then two tries in the space of two minutes around the hour mark, from Richards and Guilfoyle, gave the visitors’ the bonus point try and a 30-24 lead.

Back came the home side with two tries in the space of three minutes, from Devitt and Walsh, as they re-took the lead 36-30.

However, the visitors were not to be denied their win as Gavin Hart scored his first try for the club.

Trevaskis kicked over the conversion and the lead changed hands again with ’Stoke now in front 37-36.

With still two minutes left, Chobham tried to snatch the win away, but a late missed penalty saw Basingstoke win the game by the narrowest of margins.

Next week, ’Stoke face a local derby when Gosport and Fareham are the visitors, they lost at home 65-24 to Sutton and Epsom on Saturday.
