SHERBORNE St John Primary School’s Year 5/6 tag rugby team were crowned Hampshire champions at the Hampshire Games, held at the Aldershot Military Stadium.

The team won their pool and followed this up with golden try successes in the quarter and semi-finals as they beat Oakley 6-5 and Abbotswood 5-4.

In the final, against New Forest side Bartley, they enjoyed a 6-4 victory.

Sherborne qualified for the games after winning the Basingstoke Sparkling tag rugby festival in May.

They were not the only Basingstoke school to win medals at the Hampshire Games.

Brighton Hill Community School completed a double in trampolining competition, winning the girls’ Year 7/8 and boys’ Year 9/10 event.

St Neots took silver in the Boccia tournament, St Mary’s School finished third in the Quad Kids event, while Dove House completed a hat-trick of third places in athletics for various categories.

The following day, teams representing their towns took part in various sports and Basingstoke teams enjoyed success at under-12 judo.

There were also two second places for the team in squash (Year 7/8) and swimming (Year 3 to 6), as well as a third place in squash (Year 5/6). More than 2,500 children competed in the Hampshire Games, which is part of the Sainsbury’s School Games initiative.

They took part in a wide range of sports including athletics, badminton, basketball, boccia, cycling, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, netball, new age kurling, rounders, squash, swimming, tag rugby, table tennis, tennis, tri-golf, trampolining and volleyball.

The Sainsbury’s School Games is an opportunity to motivate and inspire young people to take part in more competitive school sport.

The Hampshire Games is backed by National Lottery funding through Sport England. It is fully inclusive and increases the opportunities for young people to take part in sport throughout the year, offering some young people their first taste of county-wide competition.
