Aldermaston’s push for Berks, Bucks and Oxon Championship promotion was dealt a fatal blow when they lost narrowly – 17-12 – to visiting Wheatley last Saturday.
The home side’s Dan Vince galloped home from 60 metres out and Greg Poole converted to cancel out Wheatley’s opener and then speedy winger Jonny Newman danced his way to the corner to give Aldermaston the lead.
This held until just before the break when the Wheatley forwards smashed their way to the try line to even up the scores at 12-12.
In the second-half both sides continued to play open rugby and either team could have snatched the winner, but it was Wheatley who took the points and almost certain promotion with an unconverted try midway through the half.
Aldermaston retain third place in the Championship and face their final match, away at Didcot, tomorrow.
