New structure at Basingstoke RFC
A NEW, more businesslike approach has been adopted by Basingstoke RFC, with a new structure being introduced.
The board of directors has been split in two. The trustee board, made up of president John Evans, chairman Dr Steve Tristram and company secretary David Crabbe, is charged with providing overall vision, while a new operating board is responsible for running the day-to-day activities of the club.
Richard Fitzpatrick is head of the operating board after being elected as chief executive officer. He will work alongside operations director Niall Catlin, sales and marketing director Jim Darragh, director of rugby James Croker and interim finance director Sharon Allen.
Fitzpatrick said: “Rugby clubs are all run on the same basis, with a president, chairman and so on. We feel that the club is actually a medium-sized business and on that basis we decided that we needed an operating board to run the club, with trustees providing the overall vision.
“In the past, people have got bogged down with the running of the club, which means they can forget about the vision. Hopefully that won’t happen now, because there are clear heads of department for each area of the club.
“We want to become a commercial business with a rugby club attached to it. The playing side is going very well and we now want to make sure the club is running just as smoothly.
“Something we are looking at now is improving our presence in the local community. We are trying to make the club more of a sports bar, showing football and sports other than rugby on the screens to attract new people in.
“It’s hard work, with lots of things ongoing, but it will all be worth it if we can get it right.”
