Briggs near to England debut

Danny Briggs could play his first game for England in tomorrow’s warm-up match against his former England Lions teammates in Abu Dhabi.

Slow left-armer Briggs, below, has been outstanding for the Lions in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka recently, resulting in his call-up to the full England ODI and Twenty20 squads.

After tomorrow’s 50-over friendly, which brings the Lions tour to a close, Briggs will be in contention for an ODI debut during next week’s series against Pakistan, with the four matches scheduled for February 13, 15, 18 and 21.

Although Hampshire fans can take pride in Briggs' progress, it may be damaging to Hampshire's hopes of promotion in the Championship. If he stays in the England ODI squad he could miss at least four Championship matches this summer, including three during the final month. Katich may have to bowl more than he probably expects!
