MASON Crane took four wickets in 12 balls to secure the South a stunning win against the North - and a series whitewash.

The Hampshire leg-spinner turned the final match of the series on its head in Abu Dhabi with an eight-over spell of 4-39.

With the North 146-2 after 27.2 overs, needing 83 from the last 76 balls, Crane bowled Sam Hain (44) and Joe Clarke (0) with successive deliveries.

The 20 year-old bowled Hain behind his legs and after dismissing Clarke for a golden duck was unfortunate not to have a hat-trick when Jack Leaning edge just short of second slip.

He soon bowled the Yorkshire batsman and completed a remarkable passage of play by having Lancashire star Liam Livingstone (50) stumped.

Liam Dawson took 1-35 from his allocation as the South won by 20 runs.

Hampshire trio James Vince (12), Tom Alsop (20) and Dawson (22) were all dismissed in the first 28 overs as the South were restricted to 228-8, before the North were all out for 208.

Fresh from his historic Sheffield Shield debut for New South Wales, Crane will not be short of confidence when he plays for the MCC in the traditional curtain raiser against the county champions, Middlesex, next week.

Only Tom Curran took more wickets in the series than his six at 18.5.

“It was good fun out there,” said Crane. “We’d already won the series so we could just enjoy it.

“All the boys did, it was a great effort to win that game.

“I felt I bowled pretty well during the first game, it was coming out really well.

“It’s always fun bowling people, seeing the bails fly everywhere, so I really enjoyed that.

“I’ve got to understand I’m still quite young and a long way down the pecking order.

“So I’ll just keep doing my stuff for Hampshire. I hope this year I can go on from there.

“It’s been a great winter so far. I’ve finished it well with the white-ball stuff and hopefully I can finish it with the red-ball next week.”

South captain Vince said: “They looked like they had it in control, but the way they play we knew if we took one or two wickets we’d be right into them.

“Daws was really good again and Mason settled in really well and changed the game.

“That’s the advantage of a leg-spinner playing, he was our main threat.

“The seamers found this pitch hard work so he was our mystery man and he bowled really well.”
