Liam Dawson played in England’s controversial T20 defeat against India, who levelled the three-match series after a thrilling last over in Nagpur.

A combination of brilliant death bowling and risible umpiring saw India set up a winner-takes-all clash in Bangalore.

Chasing a modest 145, England were 137-4 at the beginning of the final over.

Needing just eight runs to seal the match - and with it the series - they saw top-scorer Joe Root (38) given lbw by umpire Chettithody Shamshuddin from Jasprit Bumrah's first ball despite a big inside edge.

It was the last, and most egregious, in a handful of poor calls from the Hyderabadi official.

But England might still have crossed the line had Bumrah not closed things out clinically, conceding just two runs for a five-run win.

Slow left-armer Dawson (2-0-20-0) opened the bowling in what was his second T20 international – his first since his taking 3-27 on debut at the Ageas Bowl in July.

He conceded only five runs before holding on to a vital catch at long-on to give Chris Jordan the big scalp of Virat Kohli (21) in the fifth over.

He was hit for an enormous six by opener Lokesh Rahul when he returned to bowl the 12th over and was next man in when Jordan replaced Jos Buttler (15) with two balls remaining.

England captain Eoin Morgan immediately turned his attention to Wednesday’s decider.

He said: "We were in the driving seat right up until the last over. Needing eight runs off the last over, you'd probably win the game 99 times out of a hundred.

"We didn't start the over that well, a decision didn't go our way and losing a leading batsman turned out to hurt us a little bit.

"It's unbelievably disappointing to lose this game but you've got to take it on the chin. It's one-all in the series and we go to Bangalore and we're looking to clinch the series.

"It's extremely competitive, we've got two teams chomping at the bit to win and not giving each other much leeway to manoeuvre. It's all down to Bangalore and I'm looking forward to it."
