JAMES Vince failed to build on a promising start on the first day of the third Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston.

On the ground where he has endured T20 Finals Day misery for four of the last five seasons, the Hampshire captain made a fluent 39 before he was caught at second slip.

His six fours in 65 balls included cover drives against Mohammd Amir and Yasir Shah.

But then he edged Sohail Khan, who took 5-96 in his third Test, and his first for five years, low to Younis Khan.

Vince's dismissal ended the biggest stand of the innings - a fourth-wicket partnership of 69 with Gary Ballance (70) - as England eked out 297.
