Hampshire are facing a make or break fixture against Somerset today as they try and reach the quarter-finals of the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The Liam Dawson inspired win over Glamorgan on Sunday lifted Hampshire up to third place in the South Group heading into tonight’s final match against division toppers Somerset at the Ageas Bowl.

The permutations are complicated but still leave them in with a good chance: Hampshire need to win against Somerset and have a better competition run-rate than two of Kent, Surrey and Middlesex to ensure qualification into the quarter-finals.

However, just a win over Somerset, regardless of competition run-rate, could be enough to see Hants qualify if other results go their way.

If Hampshire win and better the results of Kent, Surrey and Middlesex, and Essex lose to Gloucestershire, Hants will secure a home quarter-final.

Hampshire can still qualify for the quarter-finals with a defeat to Somerset, but other results will need to go their way.

Giles White, Director of Cricket, said: “Our batting was excellent at Swansea, with Liam setting a great example as captain and showing what he is capable of at the crease.

Our seam-bowling has been really effective in recent matches and that’ll be a key factor against Somerset, who have been formidable with the bat in 50-over cricket this summer.

“The team is in a good place and Sunday’s victory has boosted confidence going into this crucial game.”

Dawson will skipper Hampshire, having been at the helm of a 186-run win over Glamorgan, scoring an unbeaten century off 69 balls at Swansea.

Will Smith was another star performer with the bat against Glamorgan, scoring 84 runs off 117 balls to help Hampshire post 316-5.

Ryan McLaren has produced impressive all-round performances in the One-Day Cup, averaging 61 with the bat and taking seven wickets in his last two matches. 20-year-old Tom Alsop will look to enhance his already hugely impressive List-A record, having scored a century and two fifties in his first seven matches. Brad Wheal, 19, took 4-38 against Kent Spitfires at the Ageas Bowl.

For Somerset, batsman Tom Abell looked in good touch as they defeated Sussex at Taunton, scoring 106 runs off 117 balls, including nine fours and a six.

Tim Groenewald bowled excellently against Sussex, taking three wickets and going for just three an over.
