Nottinghamshire beat Northamptonshire by 20 runs in Monday's Royal London One-Day Cup Group A match at Trent Bridge, where the sides set a new total runs record.

The hosts looked set for victory after posting a formidable 445 for eight, with openers Michael Lumb (184) and Riki Wessels (146) putting on a partnership of 342, which was the highest ever made in English List A cricket.

Josh Cobb picked up three wickets for 53.

Northants soon set about eating into the total, as Rory Kleinveldt smashed 128 off 63 balls, which included nine sixes and 10 fours, as he batted with a runner, while Adam Rossington scored an equally impressive 97 from 69 deliveries.

It was, though, not enough to produce what would have been a remarkable victory, as the visitors were eventually all out for 425 off 48.2 overs, Richard Levi not batting until number 11 because of a shoulder problem.

The total number of runs in the match was 870, three more than the previous record from a Friend's Provident Trophy tie between Surrey and Glamorgan at The Oval in 2002.
