James Vince was out for nine on his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

The Hampshire captain arrived at the crease with England reeling on 51-3 after losing three quick wickets.

Vince was 0 not out at lunch, after batting out 15 dot balls, including a maiden from his former Hampshire teammate Rangana Herath when the slow left-armer came on to bowl the penultimate over of the first session.

He then drove two fours in three balls against Shaminda Eranga, through the covers and back down the ground.

But, in the opening bowler's following over, he drove at a ball he will wish he had left alone and, after being beaten by Eranga's away swing, sent a thick edge to third slip

Vince's dismissal reduced England to 70-4.

Ben Stokes hit Eranga for three successive fours but then chipped the last ball of the next over, from the returning Nuwan Pradeep, to mid-on.

England had been 49-0 before debutant seamer Dasun Shanaka produced a spell of 5-2-6-3 after coming on as the tourists' third-change bowler.

They were 83-5 when Stokes departed, but Alex Hales (71*) and Jonny Bairstow (54*) added 88 as England reached 171-5 before rain stopped play.
