JAMES Vince’s England call-up means Hampshire will have a new captain for their next Specsavers County Championship match, against Nottinghamshire at The Ageas Bowl on May 22.

Vince oversaw Hampshire’s Great Escape after replacing Jimmy Adams for the last six matches of last season before being confirmed as the new club captain last October.

But with no vice-captain appointed and Adams reluctant to take on the job again, director of cricket Giles White will appoint on interim captain next week.

Former Durham captain Will Smith and ex-England U19 skipper Liam Dawson are the two most likely options.

Smith, who led a Durham side including Hampshire coach Dale Benkenstein to the 2009 title, would appear to be the favourite, having captained against Notts in Barbados two months ago.

White said: "There are options and we're certainly clear on which way we'll go. "We'll communicate that in the early part of next week."
