Hampshire are bottom of the Specsavers County Championship's first division after being thrashed by Lancashire at Old Trafford.

A first defeat of the season, by an innings and 94 runs, was confirmed when Lancashire's Simon Kerrigan completed a five-wicket haul at this afternoon.

Slow-left armer Kerrigan took 5-59 as Hampshire were bowled out for 253, having begun the final day on 76-2.

Kerrigan quickly mopped up the visitor’s tail following a morning session which had briefly threatened to raise injury-hit Hampshire’s hopes that they could salvage something from what was in truth a very ordinary performance.

Hampshire’s dogged determination before lunch had them still harbouring dreams of saving an unlikely draw despite the loss of skipper James Vince for 47 and Liam Dawson for 18 as they reached the interval on 151-4.

With play starting on time despite the overnight rain, Vince and Will Smith faced a tough examination early on from James Anderson and Kyle Jarvis and it was England hopeful Vince who blinked first.

In truth it was a strange dismissal. Vince, having driven the previous ball beautifully back past the bowler for four, looked to play a similar shot from Anderson's next full pitched delivery but seemed to check himself as he realised it was a slower ball and popped an easy chance to Wagner at short cover.

Dawson joined Smith at the crease where the new challenge came from a rejuvenated Kerrigan who gave little away before forcing Dawson to edge a regulation catch to Steven Croft at slip for 18.

After lunch the game the result was still very much in the balance until Lancashire took the new ball and Kyle Jarvis got a wicked delivery to nip back to Smith who was trapped lbw on his crease for a 203-ball 45.

From then on it became the Kerrigan show as the slow left armer found his rhythm to devastating effect. Adam Wheater was the first to go after a quicker delivery saw the ball cannon against his back leg, the wicket keeper departing for a decent 47 with the score 208-6.

Just 16 balls later and it was Ryan McClaren’s turn to trudge back to the dressing room after edging a chance to the tumbling Anderson at second slip for 15.

By now the end seemed nigh for Hampshire and the arrival of Tino Best did little to change that impression despite the Barbadian getting off the mark with a six off Kerrigan. Moments later Best became Liam Livingstone’s first first class wicket when the part-time leg spinner had him lbw not adding to his single scoring shot.

With a first five for in the top division on offer since his famous 9-51 against Hampshire in Lancashire’s Championship year of 2011, Kerrigan did not disappoint, dismissing first Gareth Andrew caught at short leg by Hameed for 21, before Mason Crane top edged his sweep to Livingstone at leg slip for three.

Hampshire were all out for 253 and having lost their five wickets for just 45 runs, a single point from the game was all they achieved and indeed probably deserved. Lancashire however, proceed into a busy May, unbeaten in their first three games and already dreaming of an unlikely crack at the championship title.
