Day 2: Hampshire (109 & 22-1) are 325 runs behind Lancashire (436)

Tino Best took five wickets in seven overs as Hampshire fought back against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

The former West Indies fast bowler dismissed Alviro Petersen (81) and Lancashire captain Steven Croft in his three overs before tea - before removing centurion Luke Procter and then bowling Liam Livingstone and James Anderson.

Best ended a devastating ten-over spell either side of tea (5-0-22-2 and 5-0-35-3), with figures of 5-57, as Lancashire were finally bowled out for 436.

Hampshire closed on 14-1, a first-innings deficit of 313 - after Anderson had Jimmy Adams caught at second slip in the first over of their second innings.

Lancashire had been 349-2 and were 370-4 going into second day’s final session, before having to settle for a first-innings lead of 327 - with Mason Crane finishing with 3-116.

The Red Rose county had threatened their highest total against Hampshire - the 671-6 declared they amassed at Old Trafford in 1911 - before Best’s burst either side of the interval.

The hosts had resumed much where they left off in Sunday’s evening session with Haseeb Hameed and Luke Procter both watchful as they reached their respective half-centuries in compiling a decisive second wicket partnership of 173.

Teenager Hameed who fell first to the leg spin of Mason Crane, edging to slip in the last over before lunch for a painstaking 62 (225 balls).

If the morning session had been all about contrition, the introduction of South African batsman Petersen after lunch saw the run rate increase dramatically as he dashed his way to 81 off 85 balls before holing out to Michael Carberry, at deep backward square leg, off Best.

A charged-up Best also accounted for Steven Croft four overs later when the Lancashire skipper edged to first slip, where James Vince pulled off a brilliant one-handed effort.

Oldham-born Procter reached the second first-class century of his career before tea.

With Lancashire looking to score quickly after the interval, Best profited.

He picked up the cheap wickets of Procter (137), Livingstone for a duck and Anderson first ball before Neil Wagner (37) and Simon Kerrigan (21*) helped bludgeon the Red Rose towards their final total.

The close of Lancashire’s innings left Hampshire with a difficult 14 overs against Anderson with the new ball.

But Carberry and Vince survived after Adams was caught Brown, bowled Anderson for the second time in as many days.
