Day Two (close): Yorkshire 593-9 dec; Hampshire 141-5 (Vince 76*, Smith 7*)

Chris Wood and Liam Dawson were both injured as Hampshire conceded a record total against Yorkshire - before ending the day battling to avoid the follow on.

England's Jonny Bairstow made 246 not out, the highest individual score against Hampshire for 13 years, and Liam Plunkett blasted a 102-ball 126 as Yorkshire amassed 593-9.

Reeling from Yorkshire's highest-ever total against Hampshire (the Tykes surpassed their 585-3 at Portsmouth in 1920), James Vince's side closed on 141-5 in reply, with their captain on 76 not out, needing another 303 to make the home side bat again.

After resuming on 270-5, the champions thrashed their way to 506-5 at lunch, adding 236-1 in just 31 overs.

Bairstow and Plunkett had amassed 158 together in a mere 18.2 overs and Hampshire's woes deepened when Wood, in his first Championship game for a year pulled up with a knee injury, while Dawson was unable to bowl at all because of abdominal pain.

Already without Reece Topley (hand), Gareth Berg (knee), Ryan Stevenson (back) and Jimmy Adams (ankle), captain Vince had to complete Wood's 19th over.

Yorkshire added a further 87 in 12 overs after lunch with Tom Alsop (2-59) claiming his first first-class wickets with his part-time slow left-arm.

Bairstow was his first thanks to a brilliant boundary catch by Tomlinson, before Will Smith bowled former Durham teammate Plunkett.

Yorkshire declared when Steve Patterson was trapped lbw by Alsop, who fell lbw to Ryan Sidebottom in the third over of Hampshire's reply.

Hampsire were 34-2 when Michael Carberry (19) drove too casually at Plunkett and was well caught by a diving Alex Lees at first slip.

Dawson had recovered sufficiently to bat and he began by straight driving Steve Patterson for four but Vince dominated the partnership by reeling of several boundaries, consecutive fours bringing him his 50 off 102 balls.

With the stand worth 59, however, Smith became Sidebottom's second lbw victim and Hampshire were struggling again on 125-4, their crisis deepening in the next over when nightwatchman Tomlinson deflected a short ball from Plunkett to Jack Leaning at fourth slip.

Adil Rashid and Adam Lyth bowled the day's last five overs in fading light and Vince's unbeaten 76 fame off 142 balls with 11 fours.

Hampshire coach Dale Benkenstein confirmed that Dawson was suffering a slight abdominal strain and not a stomach upset, but it was not believed to be too serious.

“It has not been an easy two days for us,” he said. “I thought we were at our best yesterday when we had the best of the conditions but we didn’t bowl well today.

"We had an opportunity to get on top of the game but unfortunately we didn’t do that. There were patches of good stuff but in first class cricket patches are not enough and you have to do it over and over again.

“We have now to try and salvage as much as we can out of the game. Having Dawson and Wood injured makes life pretty tough and we have not been able to get 11 on the park. But Jonny Bairstow was fantastic and we were pretty much off the boil.

“James Vince is batting very well and international class players do stand out in county cricket. Hopefully, Vince can help us get a respectable total.”

Hampshire bowling: Edwards 23-2-145-0, Tomlinson 21-4-74-2, Wood 18.4-6-79-2, McLaren 19-4 85-1, Dawson 3-0-7-0, Ervine 12-4-32-1, Vince 1.2-0-15-0, Smith 12-0-80-1, Alsop 8-0-59-2.
