HAMPSHIRE will be up against several England stars including Jonny Bairstow, one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year, when they play county champions Yorkshire at Headingley this weekend.

World T20 trio David Willey, Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett are also in Yorkshire’s 13-man squad alongside former Test batsmen Gary Ballance and Adam Lyth.

Yorkshire's formidable seam options also include former England left-armer Ryan Sidebottom and Jack Brooks, the new-ball who took more than 106 Championship wickets between them last year.

Hampshire have also selected a 13-man squad and will choose Reece Topley's replacement from Chris Wood, Brad Wheal and leg-spinner Mason Crane at Headingley.

Director of cricket Giles White is expected to replace Topley, who suffered a fractured right hand on the first day of his debut against Warwickshire, with Wood or Wheal.

The latter was the pick of the Hampshire bowlers with 2-49 as Lancashire made 283-4 in the second team's two-day friendly at The Ageas Bowl yesterday

But Crane provides another spin option in the unlikely event Hampshire decide to bat first on Sunday.

Hampshire will have the option to bowl first for the first time since the introduction of the new rule that sees the toss take place only when the away side wants to bat first.

White said: "We'll wait and see what the wicket's like. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out over the next few weeks but it is an advantage early season.

"The intentions are good. I like the idea behind it - playing on better wickets and spinners coming into the game.

"I'm all for trying new things and suspect it is a good thing."

Jimmy Adams is still unavailable after twisting an ankle while batting in Barbados, so Tom Alsop continues as Michael Carberry's opening partner.

Yorkshire will be starting their latest title defence against Hampshire, as they aim for the first hat-trick of County Championship titles since they last achieved the feat nearly half a century ago.

"We expect an extremely competitive game but if we perform as we can we're a match for any team," said White.

“It's going to be a good challenge for us, but we feel that we’re ready and will be looking to get some momentum.”

The loss of a day to rain helped Hampshire draw their opening game against Warwickshire.

But Yorkshire director of cricket Jason Gillespie is wary of the threat posed by James Vince and co.

“Hampshire are a very good side and very dangerous," he told the Yorkshire Post.

“They’ve got batsmen who have scored a lot of runs in county cricket who are very experienced, and they’ve got a bowling attack that has international experience as well as strong domestic form."
