Mason Crane took three wickets on the second day of Hampshire's pre-season friendly against Cardiff UCCE.

The students closed on 258-9 in reply to Hampshire's 369-8 declared.

After resuming on 270-5, which included Joe Weatherley's 83 on his first-class debut, Hampshire lost Adam Wheater in the day's second over, when the wicketkeeper became a fifth victim for off-spinner Alex Thomson.

But Lewis McManus struck two sixes and six fours in his 68 (88 balls) and shared a stand of 81 in 19 overs with Brad Taylor (36).

Hampshire declared when the seventh-wicket pair were dismissed in successive overs.

Trialist Hamza Ali (12-3-47-2) made the first breakthrough, having visiting captain Brad Scriven caught behind with his fifth ball after replacing Chris Wood (9-1-45-0).

Brad Wheal (13-3-21-2) bowled Cameron Herring three balls later and Crane took two wickets in five balls before Wheal ended a fifth-wicket stand of 60 by having opener Jeremy Lawlor caught behind for 81.

Crane (21-4-70-3) claimed his third wicket in the next over and Taylor (9-3-19-2) dismissed Sean Griffiths for 65 in taking two wickets in three overs.

McLaren (5-2-7-0) and Weatherley (4-0-41-0) also bowled.

Hampshire are expected to be without Jimmy Adams as well as Gareth Berg for the opening match of the season against Warwickshire on Sunday.

Adams is likely to be fit for the trip to champions Yorkshire next week, but Berg is out for at least six weeks with the knee injury sustained on the trip to Barbados.

Possible team to face Warwickshire: Carberry, Weatherley or Alsop, Vince, Smith, Dawson, Ervine, Wheater, McLaren, Stevenson, Wheal, Edwards.
