Joe Weatherley and Tom Alsop shared an opening stand of 166 before Hampshire closed the opening day of their pre-season friendly against Cardiff UCCE on 270-5 at The Ageas Bowl.
The academy products made 83 (120 balls, 11 fours) and 82 (138 balls, 14 fours) respectively before they were dismissed in successive overs from off-spinner Alex Thomson.
Captain Sean Ervine (nine) and overseas signing Ryan McLaren (10) were both out in successive overs as Hampshire slipped to 192-4.
But Chris Wood (24) and Adam Wheater (41no) added 58 from ten overs.
