HAMPSHIRE captain James Vince can break into the England Test side this year.

That is the view of Hampshire director of cricket Giles White, who reckons Vince could be the man to solve England’s top-order problems.

Vince, 24, is aiming to captain an England Lions side including Liam Dawson to victory in today’s 50-over series decider against Pakistan A in Dubai.

With 233 runs at 58.25, he is the top scorer on either side and is in the full England squad for the two T20 internationals against South Africa in three weeks’ time, following his man-of-the-series performances against Pakistan A in Dubai last month.

And with England’s 2-1 Test series win in South Africa coming in spite of a misfiring top order, White believes the Hampshire captain may soon get his opportunity at Test level.

He said: “There are definitely a few batsmen under scrutiny and Vincey is one of those players doing well for the Lions, which bodes well for him if he keeps up his good form.

“He has a very good first-class record, his temperament is excellent and he has good leadership skills.”

With Nick Compton, Alex Hales and James Taylor all failing to convince during the Test series in South Africa, Vince will be determined to start the new season as well as he finished the last.

Should he do so, a Test debut against Sri Lanka or more likely Pakistan may well follow.

Especially as England coach Trevor Bayliss said earlier this week that he hopes top-order players emerge “from the woodwork in the early season.”
